Minecraft club crafts connections, creative gaming

The new Bobcat Minecraft Club includes online meetings on a multiplayer server, monthly competitions for prizes and occasional get-togethers.

The new student-run organization, the Bobcat Minecraft Club, calls all creative builders and enthusiasts.

A multiplayer Minecraft server open to all members and monthly game competitions are just a few of the club’s perks.

Minecraft launched in 2009 as a simple “indie project” and has been a popular sandbox game ever since. As of March 2025, Minecraft has about 55 million daily active players, according to esports.gg

Avery McCoy, a freshman studying business economics, is the president of Bobcat Minecraft Club. She said Minecraft is “the most universal game in the world” and was surprised a club for the game did not already exist on campus.

“We were thinking about it over the summer because we were looking at Bobcat Connect and I saw all of these other gaming clubs,” McCoy said. “I was like, ‘Why has no one thought about Minecraft club?’ … almost everybody plays Minecraft.”

McCoy said the club plans to meet online through the multiplayer server. Winners of the Bedwars and Skywars competitions, two game modes on Minecraft servers, can earn a small Lego Minecraft set or an Amazon gift card.

Minecraft club meetings have not started; however, 17 students are already enrolled on Bobcat Connect. Brynn Schaaf, a freshman studying actuarial science, is the treasurer of the club and a friend of McCoy. She said she is excited to meet more people through the club.

“I'm a big extrovert, and that's kind of been my goal here on campus to meet a bunch of people and find a lot of friends I can do different things with,” Schaaf said. “Currently, I don't really have very many people who would play Minecraft with me.”

Schaaf said she hoped joining the club would help McCoy feel more at home on campus, since they play Minecraft together already.

“I love playing it with my friends,” she said. “It's a really great way to hang out, de-stress and take your mind off of things that are bothering you.”

Schaaf said the officers are trying to host at least one meeting each month, starting spring semester.

Like several student organizations, the Minecraft club is open to anyone who enjoys the game, regardless of skill set.

“Anybody's welcome and as long as everybody's chill with each other, we're going to have a great time,” Schaaf said.

Ashton Lambert, a Logan High School senior enrolled in the College Credit Plus Program, recently joined the club. Lambert said after discovering the club on Instagram, they immediately followed the account and joined the Bobcat Connect.

“I feel like Minecraft is one of the games that never dies, and I’ve played it my whole life,” Lambert said.

Lambert is looking forward to Bedwars competitions and having a group to socialize with. They are a commuter student and said the club’s flexibility will allow the ability to hop on the server and talk to people whenever they have the time.

“It's hard to find people to game with if you're not doing other IRL (In Real Life) things,” Lambert said. “A lot of IRL things people are interested in outside of games are correlated to gaming, so having something that's connected to your university and also gaming, it just makes it easier to find friends with two things in common.”
