Metaphorically Speaking: Face the Sunshine

I. Hate. Sunglasses

Although I think I would be a hazard to the road without my aviator sunglasses to wear on obnoxiously bright, sunny days, I hate the aura of people who wear them inside, during the winter and all other unnecessary times.

How many times have you seen someone you sort of know walking toward you - wearing their sunglasses - and then wave at you? Well, of course, you wave back because you're excited someone just said hi. Then they walk right past to someone standing behind you. And you feel like an idiot.

For many, sunglasses prevent squinting to see in the sun; their intended purpose. But for others, sunglasses are like a mask. The people who wear them as a mask hide their true identity from the world the moment they put them on.

You easily can hide what you are actually doing while wearing sunglasses - whether it be trying to read text messages on the person's phone sitting next to you, staring at the gorgeous guy across from you, hiding a bruise on your eye or maybe you just don't want someone to see that you are crying.

Hiding what you are really doing only makes your life harder. If you can't face what you're doing without sunglasses or some form of mask, maybe you shouldn't do it. If you can't look directly into someone's eyes it takes away the personal connection. And connection is an important mannerism in our society.

Hiding makes it difficult for that boy to know that you are interested, it doesn't allow someone to find out how you got that bruise and it prevents someone from helping to dry your tears.

Take off your mask! Squint at the sun and be proud of it, let that person know that you are waving at them and don't be afraid to show your insecurities.
