Jazz band benefits Big Easy

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will swing into town tonight for its 45th anniversary New Orleans Revue.

The concert is a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund. The fund has two missions: to provide humanitarian outreach to musicians who were affected by Hurricane Katrina and to revive the unique musical culture of New Orleans, according to its Web site, www.nomhrf.org. In addition to donations, two dollars from every ticket will be donated to the relief fund.

Preservation Hall is a musical venue in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter that the band has used to honor the traditional sound of the city. In the past, the building has housed a variety of businesses such as a tavern and an art gallery, but in 1961, founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe transformed Preservation Hall into its current function.

The group's director and son of Allan Jaffe, Ben Jaffe, said the band is recognized as the prominent New Orleans jazz act.

Besides the time-honored New Orleans music, the event also will showcase a variety of entertainment including fan dancers, vocalists, comedians and Vaudevillian performers.

We really wanted to do something to remind people a year later that the hurricane relief is still going on and at the same time celebrate New Orleans musical style

said Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director for the Office of University Events. This is a great way to do both. 17
