Baseball: Falcons migrate south for weekend series with 'Cats

If it ain't broke don't fix it might be good advice for car repairs, but on the diamond, the Bobcats are always looking for improvement.

The Bobcats (11-23, 6-6 Mid-American Conference) won six of their seven games without starting center fielder Gauntlett Eldemire, but his return to the lineup is a welcome addition.

Defensively it helps us

definitely

said coach Joe Carbone. He's not putting as many consistent good swings on the ball as he was before he got hurt.

Carbone said Eldemire still has pain in his left wrist that limits his arm's rotation while swinging. The preseason All-American hit a home run and scored both of the Bobcats' runs during Tuesday's win against Cincinnati.

His return also allows Adam Gecewich to return to right field. Eldemire, Gecewich, and left fielder Robert Maddox III have a combined 124 hits and .366 batting average.

The trio will start in the outfield this weekend when Bowling Green comes to town. The Falcons (15-18-1, 6-6 MAC) feature strong starting pitching and have dominated the Bobcats lately. Ohio has not beaten Bowling Green since May 19, 2007.

Bowling Green is an outstanding team

Carbone said. We haven't had good success against Bowling Green the last couple years.

Ohio looks to follow up its 2-1 win Tuesday with another solid pitching performance. No pitcher besides Brent Choban threw more than two innings that game.

All of them will be able to go Friday if we need them

Carbone said. That's why we didn't pitch them that long.

Bryce Butt (2-6) will start for the Bobcats today. Brennan Smith (2-4) will take the mound for the Falcons.

Brennan Smith is one of the best pitchers in the league

Carbone said.

Jason Moulton and Seth Streich will start tomorrow and Sunday, respectively. They will throw against Michael Frank (1-3) and Kevin Leady (5-1).

At the plate, the Falcons' main threat is sophomore Jon Berti. He is hitting .409 with 56 hits and 19 stolen bases.

Bowling Green swept Toledo last weekend to spark a five-game win streak that also included wins against Dayton and Western Michigan.

They're kind of like us

Carbone said. They got off to a little bit of a slow start

but they're playing very

very well right now.
