Ohio University has begun a search to fill the assistant dean of students’ position after it was vacant for more than a year.
The opening in the Division of Student Affairs has been empty since Jenny Hall-Jones was promoted to interim dean of students in June 2012. There are no frontrunners to replace her in OU’s national search, but the university hopes to hire someone by December 2013.
About $2,000 will be spent on advertisements to be placed in about five higher education publications. OU also has to pay to bring applicants to interview at the university, including covering travel fare and housing at the Ohio University Inn & Conference Center.
“I don’t just want someone to fill the spot; I want someone awesome,” Hall-Jones said. “We are excited to get back to a full staff and I am excited to be filling my old position.”
Position requirements include a master’s degree from an accredited university in higher education, counseling, college student personnel, or a similar field.
“It may help internal affairs, but I largely think that said help would be just as noticeable to students as it was in 2011 and before,” said Meg Nicol, a senior studying biological science.
Duties of the assistant dean of students include working with student organizations and university departments to put on Dads, Moms and Sibs weekends and overseeing the Dean of Students Office’s budget and students’ first week back to OU.
“I think it will have a lot of help (with communications by re-adding someone to this position),” said Nick Southall, president of OU’s Student Senate.
OU plans to begin interviewing candidates on Sept. 1.
