Going to school in the small town of Athens forces many students to go outside of Athens County for big concerts. With the beginning of a new quarter and a new year, many students are making plans to travel with friends to see performers.
The music I want to see doesn't always play in Athens
said Branka Sormaz, an Ohio University junior studying computer science.
Sormaz has traveled as far as France for music when she went to Hellfest in Clisson, France, last spring.
I really like traveling. I like putting everything I have in one bag and going to see a band I like Sormaz said. It combines two things I like: music and traveling.
Sormaz is not alone. Last fall, Student Senate President Robert Leary traveled seven hours to see Lady Gaga perform in Washington, D.C. Leary said deciding to travel that far to see a concert depends on who is playing and how much he likes them.
We came the furthest to see the concert. It was the last one on her tour and all the other locations were further away Leary said. Her shows are very theatrical
and I like that.
Student senator at-large Christopher Mills said half the fun of traveling to concerts is driving there and getting a hotel with friends.
It's a unique experience. I love constantly seeing what is playing around the state of Ohio
Mills said.
When traveling for a concert, always have a credit card on you just in case, Mills said. Go with people you know and trust because you are not in your hometown
he added.
Leary said he always brings good music to listen to in the car and stocks up on energy drinks for the drive. Sormaz said it is important to be aware of what you really need to bring with you.
When going to a concert far away don't drink or anything
keep a head about you and don't blindly trust someone
Sormaz said. It is important to stay safe.
