At last night's meeting, the Ohio University Student Senate discussed the Faculty Senate's vote not to change general education requirements and gave a third OU Superstar award.
Commissioner of Academic Affairs Anne Marsico said in her report that the OU Faculty Senate voted against the proposed changes in the general education plan at its meeting Monday.
Marsico, who has met with administrators many times about senior retention, said without change, the demand for Tier III classes will keep growing and worsen a problem already affecting senior retention rates.
The administration wants to get rid of it
and the faculty doesn't want to remove it until they have a replacement she said about the requirement.
Senate has passed four resolutions urging the university to change the Tier III requirement, most recently suggesting Capstone courses be temporarily granted Tier III status. At the Feb. 9 senate meeting, Marsico said allowing Capstones, final synthesis courses in some majors, to be considered Tier III classes would decrease the number of students struggling to fit into the existing classes.
Also at the meeting, Elyse Morelli, a junior public relations major, was named an OU Superstar by President of Senate Kristen Jensen.
Morelli is a member of four organizations on campus: University Program Council, Public Relations Student Society of America, ImPRessions and Student Activities Council. Two of Morelli's friends, junior Laura Alexander and senior Natalie Pariano, nominated her.
I work with Elyse in three organizations Alexander said. She dedicates a lot of time to Ohio University.
Pariano, the president of UPC, praised Morelli's work as UPC's co-chair. She said Morelli was instrumental in bringing Gavin DeGraw to OU, and she is working on two concerts for Spring Quarter.
While you might not know her name until today
you know her work
Pariano said.
Morelli, who plans on going into government relations or public affairs, accepted the award with gratitude.
I'm really flattered that they both nominated me
especially since we're friends
she said.
Senate is sponsoring an Off-Campus Lighting Walk today with members of the Athens Police Department, OU Police Department, OU Facilities Management and American Electric Power.
Women's affairs commissioner Linsey Pecikonis said the walk, which will start at 8:15 p.m., should take about 40 minutes, and afterward the walkers will meet to discuss the problem areas they notice. Interested participants can meet at the senate office in Baker University Center before the walk for free pizza.
Also, State and Federal Affairs Commissioner Mark Mecum said the OU chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is trying to plan a forum to discuss a bill designed to prohibit professors from expressing their personal opinions in the classroom. The proposed forum, which does not yet have a date, will have a politician, a professor and a student on each side of the debate.
