Jackie O's prompts patrons to taste, name beer for Dairy Barn fundraiser

Chomolungma: mother goddess of the universe.

Originally brewed as a one-time-only beer to help fund a family member’s climb up Mount Everest, Chomolungma is now one of Jackie O’s main flagship beers that is available on tap year-round.

Being let into the creative insights, such as naming beverages, is only one of the perks Tapping for the Barn attendees will get to experience.

The fundraiser, which will benefit the Dairy Barn Arts Center, will allow attendees to be part of the third-ever private tour of the new Jackie O’s taproom to see where the beer is canned and distributed to the rest of the state and to get a sneak preview of the barrel agent room, where all 100 barrels of beer will be located by the end of this month.

For 35 years, the Dairy Barn has been promoting the support of art and artists within the community and providing volunteer and employment opportunities for students and the Athens community.

“What’s also being supported is a longtime established organization that provides everyone an opportunity to experience art,” said Jane Forrest Redfern, executive director of the Dairy Barn.

Forrest Redfern said the executive board at the Dairy Barn Arts Center recognizes that during times of economic hardships, new creative outlets must be exhausted in order to keep locally owned businesses afloat.

“(Teaming up with Jackie O’s) will allow the Dairy Barn to be more sustainable by building partnerships that will get people to help support our organization,” she said.

“People like beer, so we team up with things such as this that will attract people. The money will go to paying the mortgage.”

Despite the alcoholic aspects, people of all ages are invited to attend this fundraiser, which will also include light fare in addition to drinks. There is no plan for a kitchen to be put into the new brew house; rather, Jackie O’s has been teaming up with the local food trucks that provide food at the taproom.

Wednesdays are Kiser’s BBQ. Thursdays are the Rickshaw Thai truck. Although many Athens food vendors cater to those who adhere to a gluten-free diet, Matt “Spo” Spola, creative strategist for Jackie O’s, said there are no plans in the coming months to make a gluten-free beer, but “Who knows what 2014 will hold.”
