OU tops state in national awards

Ohio University is the best among Ohio's public and private colleges and universities in regard to their nationally competitive award winners. OU produced 33 students who won awards in the 2004-2005 academic year -a new record for the university.

This year, OU students won 36 awards, the highest tally in the 6-year history of the university's Office of Nationally Competitive Awards. OU students won 23 of these awards last year.

The awards give students the ability to travel internationally as well as to perform research and to gain support for their academic endeavors. Nine of the awards used to evaluate the schools include the Boren/NSEP Undergraduate Scholarship, Fulbright, Goldwater, Madison, Marshall, Mellon, Rhodes, Truman and Udall scholarships.

Ann Fidler, dean of the Honors Tutorial College, said she was pleased with the hard work and dedication students put into the competition.

When we heard the news

we were all so excited to know that all of our hard work paid off she said. The students really deserve these awards.

Fidler also explained how hard the road is for students to be selected to compete for the awards.

There are several stages that the students have to go through. There is a screening process and preliminary interview session that students have with the committee that Ann Brown selects Fidler said. Brown is the director of ONCA.

Even though it is a difficult process

it's really beneficial to the students because it helps them a lot in the latter parts of the competition

Fidler said.

Fidler said these awards improve the university's reputation.

We intend to expand our efforts in trying to prepare students to compete for other awards that have not been won before. It is important for us to continuously work hard to make sure that our students are prepared and ready to compete

Fidler said.

OU has placed first in the competition for the last three years in the Mid-America Conference. However, the university placed second among its peer institutions, behind the University of North Carolina, which had 42 winners.
