The Union Bar and Grill's stage will be filled with performers tonight, but not with rock musicians. Instead, the stage will feature extravagant makeup, voluminous hair and colorful apparel.
The Lost Flamingo Company, which is Ohio University's only student-run theater organization, coordinates the Drag Show. It is being held in order to raise funds for LFC's annual performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Among those involved are members of The Lost Flamingo Company, OU students and faculty and various drag performers throughout Ohio.
Adam Bialek, the director of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and a drag performer himself, thinks the production will be a new and exciting experience for viewers.
You don't really hear about drag shows in the Athens community
so we figured the uniqueness of it would draw people's attention Bialek said.
Katie Meisky, a sophomore studying Spanish, will perform as drag king Mick Swagger.
I heard about the hidden community of drag performers in the Athens area and was really interested. I decided to be a drag 'king' instead of a 'queen' because I wanted to bring something different to the table said Meisky, who will be performing the song Don't Trust Me by 3OH!3.
Mat Peterson, who has been an OU Residential Coordinator for three years, is also performing in the show as Violet Lafemme. Peterson said that even though being a drag queen is one of his passions, there is one part of the job that he dislikes.
My least favorite thing to wear is the heels
Peterson said.
Even though uncomfortable shoes may bother Peterson, makeup is no problem for the performer.
I've been doing theater since grade school
so doing makeup is second nature to me. The evolution of a 'look' is so cool
Peterson said.
The Drag Show will be held tonight at The Union. It will start at 10 p.m., and admission is $5. All proceeds will go to The Lost Flamingo Company and various charities throughout Athens.
Bialek, quoting The Rocky Horror Picture Show, said, There's no harm in giving yourself over to absolute pleasure
and that's what you'll get from this show.
