Hey
hey hey goodbye
was the chant Saturday most used by Bowling Green fans in Anderson Arena as Ohio women's basketball players made themselves a fixture on the bench after committing five fouls.
Fouls were racked up by both the Ohio and Bowling Green women's basketball teams consistently and frequently as whistle after whistle was blown. This led to Ohio's demise as the team lost to Bowling Green 86-59.
Ohio (9-11 overall, 5-4 Mid-American Conference) committed 28 team fouls compared to Bowling Green's 22 and sent the Falcons (14-6, 7-2 MAC) to the charity stripe 37 times.
The first bad break came when forward Kristian Kirkpatrick fouled out with 16:52 remaining in the second half. The team then furthered the damage by making fouls that sent Bowling Green into double bonus with more than 10 minutes left.
Forward Erin Isbell made herself a permanent spot on the bench when she committed her fifth foul with more than five minutes left. By the time of Ohio's third disqualification because of fouls -forward Ciara Iglehart, who fouled out with one minute left -Ohio's loss was already set in stone.
When we got fouled
we didn't hit our free throws
Isbell said. When we sent them to the free throw line
they did hit theirs and that hurt us.
Guard Kate Achter was the lone Falcon to foul out during the game but still managed to tally 17 points for her team.
The teams combined for 50 fouls and shot 65 free throws, making 41.
The lead changed four times in the first seven minutes of the first half before Bowling Green took control at 14-8. Bowling Green led 41-29 at the half.
Ohio came out ready to step up their game the second half, hitting six early free throws to close the gap to 51-44. The Ohio run wouldn't last long as the Falcons went on a 17-3 run. Bowling Green never looked back as the Bobcats dug a hole from which they didn't propel themselves.
Wing Andrea Johnson led the team offensively with 14 points, and, despite her early exit, Isbell added 13 points and seven rebounds. Guard Simone Redd had 10 points.
The Bobcats will be back at home for midweek action against East Division leader Marshall on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in The Convo.
