McDavis' office hours draw fewer students at start of Fall Quarter

Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith met with four students in his first installment of open office hours on Tuesday, and said he is still working with three of them to address their concerns.

Smith announced last week he will hold office hours simultaneously with President Roderick McDavis, who began holding monthly office hours last February.

I received a lot of valuable insight

Smith said, who added that topics discussed included dining options and student housing.

As Smith was holding his first set of office hours in Cutler Hall, McDavis was one floor beneath him, hosting his fifth set.

The president met with a total of five students, the lowest number since he began holding office hours last winter.

Smith's simultaneous office hours, as well as the hectic nature of the beginning of the quarter, probably factored into the low number, said Becky Watts, McDavis' chief of staff.

One specific topic discussed in this month's meetings was the possibility of offering new on-campus dining options for international students, Watts said.

We plan to look into how the university could be more accommodating and more diverse Watts said.

Both administrators will hold two more open office hours this quarter, on Oct. 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and on Nov. 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
