Meditation on eating in class

I sat down in philosophy class fully prepared to devote my attention to Descartes' Meditation I. As I happily copied the professor's words into my notebooks, I heard it. I heard the deafening sound that was a fellow student's eating during class.

Distracted from Descartes, I looked up and saw the culprit. She noisily crunched on no-name salsa-flavored chips, and after each chip she would lick her fingers. I have several problems with this scene.

First off, I realize that some people have packed schedules and they must eat at any chance they get. But please ' if you must, make it something that is quiet and courteous. I cannot be the only one who finds the crinkling of a chip bag to be incredibly annoying. Also, the sound of chewing makes my skin crawl. Eating has its place, and that place certainly is not in the classroom.

The even larger issue at hand was this girl's licking her fingers. Watching her lick made me start to stress. Not only did my mind rush to the fact that a) licking your fingers is downright raunchy and b) she probably hasn't washed her hands in a while, but it also raced to the fact that she is going to touch the desk and the chair and the door andG?Well, I know I am never going to ask to borrow a pencil from her.

That all happened on the second day of class. I cannot say that I was surprised on the third day of class when the same girl showed up with chips AND salsa. Now why on Earth would anyone think that eating chips and salsa is in any way acceptable? One might as well bring a placemat and silverware to class!

Perhaps I am being a tad hypocritical, for I have once snuck a bite or two of a Kashi granola bar. The difference is that it was a bite of something small and inconspicuous, not a snack of napkin-worthy measures. When this serial snacker opened her bag of chips before a recent exam, I almost exploded. I stared and wondered: Does this bother anyone else? ' Kailey Harless
