The city of Athens will borrow more than $500,000 to begin the construction on the Waste Water Treatment Plant, which would make it more energy efficient.
At last night's meeting, Athens City Council members passed an ordinance authorizing Service-Safety Director Paula Moseley to begin accepting construction and engineering contract bids for the plant.
The project is part of a plant upgrade, which would improve water quality and meet Environmental Protection Agency energy efficiency guidelines.
Although the ordinance will allow the city to borrow $550,000, it would get $362,000 back after the project's completion, said Councilwoman Nancy Bain, D-3rd Ward, in a June meeting.
The project will allow the city to save money in the long run, Bain added.
“What we can see here is we are talking about energy efficiency and that will merge quite nicely … with our general upgrade on the west side of the (Athens Waste) Water Treatment Plant,” Bain said.
