Photo: Sheriff Kelly booked, released from jail this morning

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly was booked at a local jail Tuesday morning and released at about 10 a.m., according to Southeast Ohio Regional Jail booking records, online and confirmed by a booking clerk.

A booking photo is typically made available online for inmates, but one was not online for Kelly, who is released on a personal recognizance bond and doesn't have to stay in jail during his criminal trial.

The judge overseeing Kelly’s case agreed to place Kelly’s bail at the state-requested $50,000, but the sheriff won’t have to post bail so long as he continues to come to scheduled court hearings. However, he was to report to the jail for a booking photo, fingerprinting and DNA testing.

Kelly was indicted on 25 criminal charges, 23 of which were felonies, including money laundering and theft in office, among others.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine moved last week for the Ohio Supreme Court to begin suspension proceedings against Kelly, who is charged with multiple felonies “relating to (his) administration of, or conduct in the performance of” a sheriff’s duties, according to court documents.
