The Ohio cross country teams overcame less than perfect course conditions to improve their standings at the All-Ohio Championships on Friday in Delaware, Ohio.
With solid performances from all the Bobcats, the men's team finished second in the Division I race, only 11 points behind No. 18 Ohio State.
(Assistant) Coach (Mitch) Bentley and I were pleased with the way the men's team performed
said coach Clay Calkins. Going from fourth to second and finishing behind a ranked team is impressive.
Jason Linton, who finished the 8K race in 26:05, was the first Mid-American Conference runner to finish.
He said he hung back in the race until the three- or 3.5-mile mark and then made his move.
I was still in eighth or ninth place he said. I waited too long to make my move. Otherwise I could have caught the Ohio State guy.
Ohio had two other runners in the top 10, with Craig Leon placing fifth and Brian King crossing the line 10th. Austin Schiele (13th) and Brian List (21st) also contributed to the Bobcats' 51 points.
Rounding out the top five were Cincinnati and MAC schools Kent State and Akron.
We always thought we could beat them Linton said. It's definitely a confidence booster beating those teams. On the women's side, the Bobcats finished fifth with 112 points in the Division I race, improving on last year's ninth-place finish.
Carime Reinhart was the first Ohio runner and third overall across the line in 18:18. This was her third consecutive top-five finish this year.
Teammate Andrea Maas, who completed the 5K race in 19:03, said she went out slower than she wanted to.
I was in 66th place at the mile
she said. I wanted to go out harder
but I moved up
which was positive.
Lauren Birnie (27th), Julia Weisenborn (35th) and Rachel Beakas (36th) also scored for the Bobcats.
They all came together as a team and ran a great race
said Calkins.
MAC school Akron won the women's Division I race with 55 points. Bowling Green, Miami and Kent State finished fourth, sixth and seventh respectively in the women's team standings.
