Ohio University students might see their professors outside of the classroom today as Ping Recreation Center recognizes National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day by opening its facilities to faculty and staff free of charge.
National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day is a day for nationwide focus on the positive benefits of recreational sports
fitness and wellness according to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association's Web site.
We've done different activities for National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day but we have never done anything at this level where we let non-members (faculty and staff) in for the day
said Hafedh Benhadj, director of Ping Center. We're hoping that faculty and staff take advantage of this and have one fun day to see the offerings (at Ping) and participate if they haven't before.
NIRSA proclaimed Feb. 22 National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day in 1999, choosing this day because it mirrored the date NIRSA was founded in 1950. The Association works with higher education organizations to advance student learning through recreation
according to their Web site. They also aid in education and research for collegiate and recreational sports.
Ping is offering '80s-themed group fitness classes, which include a total body workout at 8 a.m., bootcamp at 6:30 p.m., and a step class at 7:30 p.m. Participants are encourage to wear '80s-style workout apparel. Faculty and staff will also have free access to Kickboxing, Awesome Arms
Pilates, Zumba, Power Yoga and CORE classes, which are all offered regularly on Mondays at Ping.
Faculty and staff members can purchase a membership to Ping for $395 per year or $115 per quarter, or they can buy a day pass for $7. Fitness Director Sarah Shore hopes that this promotion will encourage faculty and staff to consider buying a membership.
Maybe once the faculty and staff get in there
if they haven't had the opportunity before
they'll see what Ping has to offer
she said. The OU intramurals is big on NRSF day since it's a national event. I think it's helping the in the long run.
