The number of students enrolled in summer quarter classes at Ohio University in Athens is slightly higher than the number at the same time last year with nearly 150 more undergraduates and about 50 more graduate students enrolled.
As of July 9, summer quarter enrollment for undergraduate students at the Athens campus was 4,033, said Pam Brown, director of Ohio University summer sessions. Last year on the same date, undergraduate enrollment for summer quarter was 3,887.
Enrollment for graduate students at the Athens campus as of July 9 was 2,169. Last year's graduate student enrollment on the same date was 2,116, Brown said.
Summer quarter enrollment includes first and second summer sessions and online classes, Brown said.
She said summer enrollment constantly changes as students add and drop classes.
Although enrollment to date is higher this summer than last summer, Brown said. The main trend is that enrollment has held very steady.
However, the numbers for the Early Start program, in which admitted freshmen come to Athens early and take classes during the summer, have steadily been increasing.

When the program began in summer 2003, about 30 students participated.
This year 69 students were enrolled in the program as of July 9. At the same time last year, 48 students were enrolled.
With an increase in summer enrollment, some businesses in Athens are noticing an increase in sales.
Ian Detamore, manager at Skippers Bar and Grille, 22 W. Union St., said there is more business on nights that they have specials than there has been in prior summers.
Ryan Navaroli, manager at the Athena Grand, 1008 E. State St., said college-oriented movies have continued to do well in the summer.
I'd say we're a little busier (than in past summers) he added.
