Group creates outlet for female expression

For a group of female Ohio University theater students, a game created to pass time during a tedious audition process resulted in The F Word, a new performance group for women to share their experiences.

Corinne Zachry, a founding member, said it was formed by a group of students at an audition callback at the beginning of the quarter. While waiting, she and some other women began choosing topics and taking turns telling stories on it.

We just all had such different experiences

and some of us had really similar experiences the freshman studying theater said. We all just (thought it was) really amazing and we had to do something with it.

The group welcomes all forms of expression, including poetry, stories, photos, paintings, plays and music.

We want everyone to see that you can share these stories and they can be funny or they can be artistic

sophomore Jessica Link said. And it's OK because everybody goes through something like it.

Students can also submit work and have it performed by a member of the group, even if they wish to submit anonymously.

This quarter, the group plans to have one performance during Week 9 or 10. The topic for the show is body image.

I thought body image would be a good way to start

member Arielle Giselle Rogers said. Body image is really tied up in self-perception

and I think people should be able to talk about their bodies.

While The F Word was created as a way to express ideas on the female experience, men can submit and perform work as long as it addresses their observations on the female experience, Zachry said

This is about females

and it was started by females. But that's not to say that men don't have observations about it too

Zachry said.

So far the group has received about 20 submissions and doesn't plan on limiting the number of submissions accepted; however some submissions might be held if they pertain to a topic that The F Word will cover in the future, Zachry said.

The F Word will be accepting submissions for its Winter Quarter performance until Jan. 31. Submissions and questions can be sent to •thefwordladies@gmail.com or at The F Word's weekly meetings at 4 p.m. on Sundays at 14 ½ Hocking St.
