THE HUNGER GAMES

Many books are read daintily in pieces, sipped slowly like a flute of wine, but a few delicious books must be consumed whole - devoured in every available moment, creating a vacuum between the reader and the frantic turning of each page. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - which lies deceptively in the young adult section - is one such absorbing, yet satirical, book. It focuses on an ardent government that orders 24 randomly chosen children to fight to the death on national television. While the plot alone is gripping, what really drives the book is the carefully constructed characterization of Katniss, the sassy, survival-savvy, 16-year-old protagonist. I read the series during every available second ... one could say I feasted on it.

VIETNAM - THE COUNTRY, NOT THE WAR

Contrary to what most people think Vietnam is actually a country, not just a war from the 70s. I spent part of winter break in Nha Trang, Vietnam, and I was not fighting the Vietcong. Most Americans wouldn't think of Vietnam for a vacation or study aboard destination, but a lot of good times can be had in Vietnam. The food is amazing and being able to say I swam in the South China Sea after eating a dinner that cost a dollar is just awesome. Also people in Vietnam are some of the nicest you will ever meet. But stay away from the Australians, they aren't very nice.
