School of Film to show 7 short student works tomorrow in Baker Center Theater

Students will share in the art of movies as the School of Film screens the short films of second-year graduate students.

Seven films, ranging from about 2 minutes to 15 minutes each, will be shown.

(The films) are tightly edited

and there is such a difference in the entertainment value when you have a short amount of time to hold the audience's attention without major movie stars and awesome soundtracks and on a limited budget said Monte Patterson, one of the participants.

Each year in the three-year graduate film program, students have a chance to screen their work. The first year, they must make black-and-white films without sound and with a limited amount of film. The second-year screening is more open.

The second year is where we really get to show what we have as artists. We have access to large crews and (contribute to) each other's films and we get to come up with locations. Also the films are self-funded

so we learn to work on small budgets

Patterson said.

They get to be independent filmmakers

said Steven Ross, director of the School of Film. It is the spirit of the school that they get to decide.

For the filmmakers, the screening represents more than a year of learning experiences.

I think it is a quite interesting range

a really fun show filled with all sorts of films from experimental to comedies

and I have learned a lot and had fun

said participant Anja Jovanovic.

There are about 20 second-year graduate students in the film school, but only eight will participate in this screening. The others are combining their second- and third-year projects, working on larger films that will be presented next year.

Audiences should be prepared to expect a wide range of content.

I think they can expect professional looking movies

a diversity of content

and some of the films are very edgy. This year is the first time where at the bottom of the posters we printed 'Some content may not be suitable for children
