Student Senate hoping to give students a say in general fee

Student Senate passed a resolution yesterday to create the General Fee Governance Council to give students of Ohio University a voice in where the university's general fee will be spent. We have passed something that is seriously monumental

Academic Affairs Commissioner Patrick Heery said, adding that this is a huge step toward shared governance. The fee was established to give the students what they want, and with this council students should be able to govern where the general fee will be spent, Heery said.Previously, the general fee's spending was unspecified and up to the president to make recommendations as to where it would go, Heery said.Heery proposed the resolution to make sure it happens to get the senate voice behind it and to put forth students' vision before the committee, he said.Proposals regarding how the fee should be spent will be put in front of the council, which will have hearings and vote on the proposal. The council will consist of 11 voting members, including four Student Senate members, one representative from the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, one representative from the Resident's Action Council, one graduate student and one faculty member to be appointed by Faculty Senate, according to the resolution.
