Your Turn: Sign language classes should be open to all

It saddens me that at a school that I both pay for and respect, they will not let non-HSLS students take sign language. It is a four-credit-hour course that I believe should be offered to all majors at Ohio University. As a person who grew up working with people with disabilities, along with having deaf members in my extended family, I looked forward to coming to a big institution and learning abilities such as sign language. It is restrictions like these that further widen the gap between the people who can and cannot communicate with the hearing-impaired and deaf. I hope this letter strikes an emotion in someone out there and they too find this to be ridiculous.

John Tyler Cancila is a freshman MIS and business pre-law major.
