It wasn't easy for the eight members of Elemental Groove Theory to put everything on hold for music - or tell their parents about the decision.
Out of their struggle came the song Live Your Style. The band will host Open Stage at 8 tonight at Jackie O's Pub and Brewery, 24 W. Union St.
Formed in 2007, the rock-funk-Latin fusion band picked up each of its eight members separately.
Matt and I just started absorbing people from around town. Just meeting people
jamming with them then asking them to join the band said Dan Perez, an Ohio University senior studying music production who plays guitar and sings.
Members compose music during jam sessions before lead singer Rachel Maxann crafts accompanying lyrics.
They will be practicing and working out parts and I will be to the side figuring out the lyrics
said the senior studying psychology. If they change something
I will change with it.
Live Your Style started as a bass line written by Matt Urminski, a senior studying music and the band's drummer.
From the second Maxann heard the song, she knew the lyrics would be about the band's journey.
Eric leaned over to me in practice and sang
'You can tell your mother now
you can tell your father how
' Maxann said. I thought that was fitting because most of the members of the band had to tell our parents at some point
'Hey
college isn't happening
normal life isn't happening.'
The song encourages listeners to figure out what makes them happy and chase that dream, just as the band did. Sometimes, music comes before school.
