Hiring process begins for new Baker jobs

Five venues opening in the new Baker University Center will create at least 180 new student jobs Winter Quarter, but the first major recruitment effort attracted few students.

Ohio University Auxiliary Services will need an estimated 200 to 215 students ' including positions that transfer from the current center ' to fill positions in its catering services, retail store, Latitude 39 restaurant, food court and Front Room, said Emily Howard, marketing manager for housing and food service.

This quarter, Baker University Center employs about 14 students in the Front Room, 26 to 30 in the Corner Room and 52 through Baker University Center Catering, and Howard said many of those jobs will transfer over.

Only 30 students, however, attended Auxiliary Services' Baker University Center student employment expo, which took place in the Nelson Dining Hall's Post Office Annex Monday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Howard said.

This is our first step in the effort

Howard said Monday. It has definitely been a slow day.

Kevin Hurst, chef and general manager of Latitude 39 and the The Front Room for the new center, said another expo will take place before the end of October.

Applicants will be interviewed Oct. 16 through Oct. 31, and training will be scheduled in the last few weeks of Fall Quarter, Howard said, adding the goal is to have all employees hired by Nov. 1. Splitting up

While many dining options from Baker will carry over to the new center, one feature going for good is the Corner Room.

Employees at the Corner Room, however, will be employed in whatever areas possible in the new center, Hurst said.

Although the 30-person Corner Room staff is guaranteed jobs, many students are reluctant to split up after working together so long, said senior Katy McPherson, student manager at the Corner Room. Anyone continuing on to the new center must train for all seven food concepts in the food court so employees can be rotated, she said.

They won't let us move as a unit she said, adding that it is unlikely Corner Room student managers will keep their manager positions at the new center because it would result in a pay cut.

Current Front Room employees will have the opportunity to continue working at the new Front Room, which will switch management from Student Affairs to Auxiliary Services, but Student Affairs is also giving Front Room employees the option of working in other capacities ' such as conference or office assistants ' in the new center, said Betsy Shonebarger, student supervisor at The Front Room.

Many long-time Front Room employees are reluctant to work under different management, Shonebarger said.

I really enjoy the people that I work for right now she said.
