Ohio University will play host to a conference this weekend on ethics in blogging and online journalism, which will include several speakers and opportunities for student participation.
There is not enough communication about journalism ethics
even more so about online journalism ethics and we want to get student conversations going said Bernhard Debatin, associate professor of journalism and organizer of the event, in an OU Research News press release.
The event will feature several keynote speakers, including Dan Gillmor, a columnist for the Financial Times and author of the book We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People
for the People; and Clifford Christians, a professor of journalism and media studies are the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
The conference begins 11 a.m. Friday in Scripps Auditorium, with an address from Gillmor, followed by a panel discussion and a workshop focusing on blogging. All events are open to the public.
Major Robert Bateman, a strategist for the Pentagon who has published more than 200 freelance articles and reviews, will present Blogging from a War Zone at 9:30 p.m. in Bentley Hall room 140.
The conference will continue Saturday with the topic of online journalism and will include a presentation by Christians, panels and workshops. A live broadcast and full schedule of events can be viewed online at freud.citl.ohiou.edu/ethics.
The event is sponsored by OU's Institute for Applied and Professional Ethics and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.
The institute consists of faculty from the Department of Philosophy, College of Business and journalism school and typically plans a student conference every other year. Organizers chose to wait and spend more time planning this particular event, said Kathleen Evans-Romaine, administrative assistant for the institute.
We've been planning this for about a year and a half
she said. This particular (conference) is bigger than ones before.
Conferences are aimed at students and bring in visitors from as far away as Canada, Evans-Romaine said.
This one is going to be in a different format than in the past; we will actually be providing an opportunity for students to sit down with professional researchers
she said. In the past we had one speaker
this year we have 10. We knew it would be harder to bring in more people but thought it was the best for the students.
