OU student housing fair moves in at Baker

Students still looking for housing for next year will be able to shop for a new home without ever leaving Baker University Center.

Athens rental companies will compete for students' business under one roof today.

Students still looking for housing for next year can check out offers from various rental companies in Baker Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

The first annual Ohio University Student Housing Fair brings together various Athens rental companies, as well as speakers who will provide students information about choosing the right housing, renters' rights and saving money.

Stephan Oechsle, coordinator for Off-Campus Living, said 15 property companies would take part in the fair, offering information about housing available for next year. The companies will set up times for students to view the property and provide sample contracts, Oechsle said.

The Summit at Coates Run, an Athens apartment complex, approached the Office of Off-Campus Living about creating the event, he said. The company is sponsoring the fair, with help from Student Senate and The Post.

Oechsle will give a speech entitled What Housing is Right for You? during the fair.

(I'm) really encouraging people to think about what they personally need out of off-campus living

he said.

Oechsle will also talk about Student Senate's pick-a-property Web site. The site allows students to rate and comment on houses they have lived in, and can be a good resource for students looking for housing, Oechsle said.

Sustainability Coordinator Sonia Marcus and Student Legal Services Attorney Kristine Hays will also speak during the fair. All the speakers will be available to answer questions after speaking, Oechsle said.
