Board of Trustees: Fellowships herald 'wonderful' projects

Faculty will travel to countries including Spain, Bali and Indonesia next school year on fellowships recently approved by the Ohio University Board of Trustees.

The trustees approved 40 faculty fellowships at its full board meeting Friday — one fewer than were awarded last year.

In its board report, the office of Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit provided the name of the faculty members who were awarded fellowships, as well as their departments, the length of their leave and a brief description of the projects they would be conducting during their leave.

“In the time I’ve been here, we have not provided that information in the board report,” Benoit said. “I thought it was useful to provide a description of what people are doing on their leaves.”

The leave times range from one to three quarters. Of the 40 faculty members awarded fellowships, the largest number — 16 — is from the College of Arts and Sciences. Four faculty members at regional campuses were also awarded fellowships.

The number of fellowships awarded has ranged from 35 to 54 since the 1997-98 academic year.

The projects’ faculty members will be working on range from researching destructive fishing in Indonesia to investigating shadow puppetry in Bali. Several faculty members will use their time off to write research papers or books, while one will spend his time completing music compositions.

“The trustees were very grateful (for the additional information), because people are doing some wonderful projects,” Benoit said.
