Department of Aviation to undergo review

An internal review prompted by student outrage will examine the Ohio University Department of Aviation, college officials announced in an emergency departmental meeting Wednesday night.

The review will examine all aspects of the department's operations, including its budget, instruction and student costs, said Dennis Irwin, dean of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology.

Jim Rankin, associate dean for research and graduate studies of the Russ College, will lead the review, he said.

A licensed flight instructor, Rankin is also the former director of the Avionics Engineering Center.

Irwin said he ordered the review in response to student complaints that were raised at a college-wide meeting on Monday night.

During the meeting, students raised concerns that included unfair fees and unnecessary policies that cut into practical instruction time.

Matt Cox, a senior aviation major who complained at the meeting, said he thinks the review will help resolve the issues students were having with the school.

Over the past four years

(the school) has declined a bit and I'd like to see it get back to where it was he said.

Irwin said there was no official deadline for the review's completion, but that he thought it would be finished in the next few weeks, adding that he had not decided how the results would be published.

Department of Aviation Chairman B.J. Galloway refused to comment on the review, saying that he could not speak about his department's internal matters.
