The Ohio University women's golf team was in Indian Springs, Ohio, this weekend for the Mid-American Conference Championships.
The tournament, played at Walden Ponds Golf Course, was cut short due to severe weather conditions, and the last day of play was cancelled.
Ohio fell just short of achieving their season-long goal, finishing the tournament in second place, 13 strokes behind Kent State University. The Golden Flashes won the tournament for the seventh consecutive year. This marks the fifth time out of the past seven MAC Championships that Ohio has finished in second.
It's extremely frustrating because we were so close
departing senior and team captain Sara Ann Palmer said.
The Bobcats were led by sophomore Meredith Waterston, who fired a 72-79 in the first two rounds of play for a total of 151. She finished the tournament in third place, just two strokes off the pace set by the individual medalist, Katie Sundberg of Ball State, and one stroke behind runner-up Jenna Walter of Western Michigan.
Also competing for Ohio were sophomores Kristen Mautz, who finished ninth with a 77-79-156 and Shanna Siefke (75-87-162), as well as junior Julie Tomlinson (76-82-158) and Palmer (81-83-164), who played in her final tournament as a Bobcat after four years in the program.
The team shot a 300 in the first round, leaving it 13 strokes behind Kent State after day one. The two teams tied in the second round, both shooting a 323 in wet and windy conditions. All nine teams arrived at the course Sunday to 30-degree temperatures and snowy turf. As a result, Ohio was one of just three out of nine MAC teams that wanted to finish, meaning the tournament was officially over. Since the third and final round was cancelled, Kent State was awarded the tournament title.
We felt we really had a chance in that final round so it's hard not being able to see if we would have had enough assistant coach Jeff Hetler said.
Rounding out the top five teams were the University of Western Michigan, Ball State University, and the University of Toledo, respectively.
Men's Tourney Cancelled The Ohio State University Kepler Intercollegiate was cancelled for the first time in its 36-year history on Saturday, due to bad weather. As a result, the Ohio University men's golf team had the weekend off from tournament play.
The Bobcats will now look forward to next weekend when the team will compete in the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State University.
