Oh
isn't that a party school? This was the reaction I received from many people in my small town three years ago when I decided I was going to attend Ohio University. Even though we are ranked number five of the top party schools in the country on the Princeton Review, we students deserve more credit and less judgment.
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that my life feels like a MasterCard commercial. Rent: $1,200. Utilities: $70. Books: $200. Making the most out of the best years of my life: Priceless. Unfortunately, paying bills is part of life, especially when the bank of mom and dad has closed. When the best years of your life and the most expensive part of life go hand-in-hand, things can get messy. But we can handle it; in 2008 there were 4,361 students who received their undergrad degree from OU, 956 received their masters and 253 received their doctoral.
Many students at Ohio University are involved with some kind of extracurricular, whether it's an intramural, greek life, Res Life, or student government. Students choose to be involved in order to make friends and boost resumes. By wanting to improve a resume, obviously alcohol is not the only thing on our minds; getting a job and our futures are too! Ohio University has even dropped in party school rankings on the Princeton Review over the years. In 2005, we were number two, and now we're down to number five.
In a recent letter to The Post titled Townie' thanks OU students urges local involvement the students at Ohio University were welcomed and praised for giving life to the town of Athens. The letter included a list of activities to do in Athens, and it didn't center on the bars or party scene. Activities such as the arts community, festivals and politics were all suggestions made for students and locals alike. Students at Ohio University shouldn't get a bad reputation because we like to have fun. We are the future: future nurses, dieticians, and even governors. We believe in ourselves and need you to believe in us too.
