Softball: Marshall comeback leads to 2 Ohio losses

A slow but steady rally by the Marshall Thundering Herd turned an 8-2 third-inning deficit into a 9-8 second-game victory on their way to sweeping the Ohio softball team in Tuesday's doubleheader.

I've never been part of a game in which we had 13 hits

8 runs and didn't come out on top coach Jill Matyuch said. Marshall was just phenomenal today.

Ohio (22-26) tallied three runs in the first inning of game two, which was keyed by Amanda Sacks' two-run single with the bases loaded to put Marshall in a 3-0 hole before they even stepped to the plate.

The Herd countered with a single run in each of the first two innings, but the Bobcats put up five runs in their half of the third, thanks to a Kelly Rodriguez bases-clearing double that drove home three runs and put Ohio up, 8-2.

Marshall chipped away at the lead, scoring at least once in every inning before Deanna Tourville's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Herd (27-20) the victory.

In the first game, Marshall used a four-run second inning to coast to a 5-1 victory. Rodriguez produced Ohio's only run of the game, a second-inning homerun G

Rodriguez said.

(The losses were) a good experience for bringing out the positives and not focusing on the negatives

catcher Marian Davis said. Davis went 3-for-4 in the second game, scoring two runs. We just have to look forward to the next game.

The Bobcats will return home for today's matchup with Indiana. The Hoosiers (21-20-1) are coming off an 11-3 blowout win over IPFW on Tuesday. They are led offensively by Lauren Hines, who is batting .411 with seven homeruns and 22 RBIs. Mariangee Bogado is Indiana's top pitcher with a 1.67 earned run average and 217 strikeouts on the season.

The first pitch of today's game will be at 4 p.m. at the softball field.
