Swimming and Diving recap: Ohio collectively wins 16 events, defeats MAC rival Buffalo

Twelve swimmers and divers won individual events as the Ohio men's and women's swimming and diving teams added to the win column this weekend against conference rival Buffalo.

The men evened out their Mid-American Conference record, outscoring the Bulls 125-74. The women improved their conference record with a 133-101 score.

It's great to have both the men and women win at the same time

so I'm really happy for them said coach Greg Werner.

The Ohio men (2-3 overall, 1-1 MAC) won six individual events and a relay. Swimmer Donald Jupp, who won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, said his performances were similar to how he has been swimming recently.

The 100 free was a close race between me and Jeff Hurst from Buffalo. He is a pretty good swimmer Jupp said. I was ready to race him. I was glad he was in the event.

Charlie Sparks, Luke Herlehy, Jason Reutter and Jim Bayne also took first place in their respective events.

Reutter, Jupp, Stephen D'Arrigo and Tyler Post also teamed up to win the 400-medley relay in 3:34.17.

The Bobcat women (6-2-1, 3-1-1 MAC) won nine of 13 events, with seven different swimmers finishing first in their individual events.

Emily Wylam followed up last week's performance that earned her MAC Swimmer of the Week honors with a first-place finish in the 400 individual medley. She also was part of the first-place 200 medley relay.

I've never swum the 400 IM before

so it was a good opportunity to swim something different and get to race something besides backstroke

she said.

Courtney Gallo, Ashley Marion, Lindsey DeStefano, Ilse Petersen and Sigal Simsolo also finished first in their individual events.

Jess Orlov won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

She has been diving very

very well

Werner said of Orlov's performances. She had some very nice scores and performed well. She's really starting to come around.

Werner said the team did well, but there is still room for improvement before the conference championships.

I was happy

but then again I was unhappy

in that it seemed like performance-wise we had a lot of people that broke through and did fantastic things that they haven't done all year

he said. Then we had some people that weren't quite as good as they were last week

so you obviously want to continue to get better and better.
