Local family donates land for woodland and wildlife preserve

The city of Athens will have a woodland and wildlife preserve after a local family donated 5-acres of land on the south side today.

Athens' Gawande family donated the land, which will be managed by the city's Arts, Parks and Recreation Department. The land will be called the Gawande Family Preserve, according to a news release from City Planner Paul Logue.

The land will be located off Cardiff Lane on the south side of Athens in order to “preserve the land as open space in perpetuity,” according to the release.

The property, which will help the city meet goals for expanding open space preservation, will be restricted so it can only be used as a woodland and wildlife preserve, according to the release.

“The City of Athens would like to thank the Gawandes for their kind and thoughtful stewardship that will be a benefit to the citizens of Athens for years to come,” according to the release.
