Although he was impressed by the maturity and improvement of his young quarterbacks this spring, coach Frank Solich still has senior Brad Bower slotted as the team's starter going into the fall.
Well, for now at least.
Brad Bower will come back and with his experience
we'll start him at No. 1 Solich said after Saturday's Green & White game. But it's going to be a battle to see who takes this thing over and who will be the guy.
Bower, the only one of five players competing for the starting job who has seen a significant amount of real-game experience, was unable to participate in any of the team's scrimmages this spring because of a bone bruise, leaving the door open for the others to impress the coaches.
Spring is there to see how much we can handle; a test basically
junior college transfer, sophomore Theo Scott said.
If spring was in fact a test, then it looks like Scott scored the highest. The most athletic and mobile of the five, Scott put up the best numbers in the team's three scrimmages this spring, capped by Saturday's performance when he threw for 86 yards and had a 44-yard run.
It's obvious he's got the ability to take the ball and run with it
Solich said. He'll be the kind of quarterback that can scramble and make big plays for you on busted plays. He's also got the ability to be a good passer.
Scott himself has also been impressed with his quick adjustment to Ohio's offense and has the ultimate goal of being the team's starter, but knows he doesn't have the final decision.
It's not my say
it's the coach's
Scott said. In my mind
I want the job just as bad. I want to be the starter. So I'm just trying
playing hard and trying to let the coaches know I can take control of this team and run the show.
Another candidate that impressed Solich this spring was sophomore Josh Febus. Febus, who saw action sparingly as the team's third-string quarterback last year, has the strongest arm of the five and started with the first-team offense Saturday.
All I can worry about is what I do every snap
Febus said. If I do my job on every snap
then I take care of my job. There's a lot of talent here so
