Event helps African students feel at home, share culture

Crossover is an annual program portraying Africans’ diverse culture through dance, music and storytelling. It was held by the African Student Union on Saturday.

The main purpose was to welcome new Ohio University students from the African continent, said African Student Union President Jeremiah Asaka.

Performances from the event were a blend of poetry recitals, musical performances, storytelling, a fashion show and dance ranging from the different African countries.

“Crossover was an opportunity for us to get together and celebrate the uniqueness of our culture through music and dance as well as reconnect the different African students together,” said Thelma Quardey, a Ghanaian and a first year master’s student in Latin American studies.

Some of the poetry recitals by some African Students were in “twi,” one of the widely spoken languages in Ghana, and “wolof” in Senegal.

The event attracted about 80 people.

Guests were treated to African dishes such as Jollof rice, plantain and other intercontinental dishes like beef sauce, rice and fruit.

“The event was a mixture of enlightenment and entertainment. The array of food as well as a delicate blend of colors took one back to the motherland Africa,” said Toluwani Adekunle, a Nigerian and first year master’s student in international development studies.
