U.S. Senate hopeful Paul Hackett will be in Athens on Saturday to promote his 2006 U.S. Senate campaign.
Hackett will be speaking at the Athens Community Center from 1 to 3 p.m., 701 E. State St. During the two hours, he said he will introduce himself to the people of Athens and then open the floor to questions from the audience. Hackett said he will most likely touch on issues such as how the Democratic Party is running and where it should go in the future.
Hackett, a veteran of the war in Iraq, made a notable effort in 2004 when he ran for U.S. Representative as a Democrat in a heavily Republican district, narrowly losing the election. Even though his service in Iraq is over, Hackett said, he would like to keep serving in other ways. If elected, Hackett would be the only Senator to have served in the Iraq war.
I still want to help my state and my country through continuous service
Hackett said.
Hackett is competing against Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, for the Democratic nomination. The winner of the Democratic primary will go up against incumbent Senator Mike DeWine, R-OH.
