Letter: Making biking in Athens easier will alleviate traffic and parking congestion

Improving the bike path and bike racks throughout the city and on campus are cheap alternatives to pricey projects.

Currently, the city is working out plans for the construction of a multi-million dollar swimming pool complex that will provide a facility for exercise and recreation. The city is also involved in a multi-million dollar re-do of the intersection of Route 33 and East State Street, a project that will alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic safety.

Ohio University is always in the process of reconfiguring its parking infrastructure: Parking lots get eliminated in the interior of the campus and new lots get constructed on the perimeter. Those projects cost a lot of money. And the university is constantly incurring ill will through its clumsy handling of parking permits and clumsy enforcement of parking regulations.

May I humbly suggest a relatively cheap expenditure that would provide for exercise and recreation, alleviate traffic congestion on East State Street, improve traffic safety, alleviate the parking crunch on campus and spread cheer instead of incurring ill will. Plow the bike path and improve bike racks throughout the city and on campus.
