Athens man shot in head, details blurry

A 29-year-old Athens man was transported to Columbus Tuesday after being shot in the head, authorities said, though details are not all clear.

“What we know is that we believe the incident happened Sunday evening, and he then went to the hospital Tuesday afternoon for treatment,” Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said Thursday. “He at no time attempted to contact us, it was actually the hospital that contacted us. So, that’s how we got involved.”

Based on limited information the department received, he does not believe there was an ongoing threat to the community.

Pyle said he couldn’t confirm how the man got to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital originally, and added that any report that gave the impression that he was shot then transported to the ER immediately after is inaccurate.

“We knew the incident had occurred several days earlier,” Pyle said. “That’s what we were told. Otherwise, we would’ve put it out immediately on Tuesday.”

The shooting occurred in the northeast section of town, Pyle said, adding that investigators are still looking into the case, leaving critical details of the incident unanswered.
