Officer's canine partner euthanized

A K-9 deputy with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office was put down Thursday morning.

The dog’s — named Turner — stomach had turned. Turner worked alongside Deputy Matt Mays for four years as one of two dogs working at the office, Sheriff Pat Kelly said.

Turner was removed from service for a few weeks this month because of intestinal problems, Kelly said, adding that taking the dog out of the field and putting him down wasn’t an easy decision.

“It was a difficult decision for Matt, but he had to do that,” Kelly said.

Mays already has a replacement for Turner — a dog named Dolly, who Kelly hopes will become a certified police dog as soon as Friday.
