It took a false start in the final event for the Ohio women's swimming and diving team to beat Ohio State and extend its home dual meet win streak to 54.
An Ohio State swimmer left the starting block before her teammate touched the wall, disqualifying the team from the event. The mistake allowed Ohio's (6-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 Mid-American Conference) 400-yard freestyle relay teams to move from second and third places up to first and second, giving them the points needed for a 157-143 win over the Buckeyes.
Coach Greg Werner said it's nice anytime the team gets a win, but it's especially nice when they beat a team that is considered the favorite going into the meet.
I knew if we could get a couple of those upsets here and there
we could be in the hunt and that's exactly what happened he said. We were able to get it down to the last relay and come away with a win.
The Bobcat women won six of the meet's 15 events, including 1-2-3 sweeps of the 200 freestyle and backstroke events.
The Ohio men (1-4, 0-2 MAC) had two individual winners Saturday, but that was not enough, as Ohio State won 163-111.
We knew we were a significant underdog
but what that does is take a lot of pressure off them and allow them to concentrate and perform
Werner said. That only makes it better for the next time they compete.
However, the Ohio men earned their first win of the season Friday night as they defeated Denison 135-102, winning nine of 13 events.
Werner said the team knew they could win based on their results against the Big Red in past meets.
A meet that went down to the last event in the last two or three years
they were able to decide it before the last relay
he said. That's a tribute to them that they performed very
very well
and they wanted it.
Donald Jupp, who won the 50 and 100 freestyles against Denison, said he was excited for the men to get their first win of the year.
Yesterday we stepped up and had a good meet
he said. Today
we were a little tired and didn't swim as well
