Ryland Fisher, former editor of the Cape Times in Cape Town, South Africa, and the recipient of the 2006 Images and Voices of Hope Award will speak at 7 tonight in Baker University Center Ballroom.
Fisher, an anti-apartheid activist and advocacy journalist during the apartheid-era in South Africa, will address the efforts of South Africans and other formerly dominated people to create progressive, contemporary societies.
Fisher received the Images and Voices of Hope Award in 2006 for his 12-part series in the Cape Times called One City
Many Cultures where he examined Cape Town's various religious, ethnic and cultural groups. The award is given for journalism that is transforming the public space and recognized Fisher's efforts at creating social harmony in post-apartheid South Africa.
I was interested in having him here and letting him speak because I don't think students have that international experience said Jordan Robinson, coordinator of the event, It's good to expose people and let them know what's going on.
The event is sponsored by E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, OU Multicultural Programs, the department of African American studies, the department of African studies and Baker Center.
