Witnesses say police cruiser hit student

A male Ohio University student was struck by an Athens Police Department cruiser traveling south near 2 1/2 Elliot St. around midnight yesterday, witnesses said.

The cruiser had its lights on and appeared to lock its brakes before hitting the student crossing the road, said a nearby resident who identified himself as Matt Hill.

He just hit the kid and the kid flew

he said, adding that the student was taken from the scene in a police cruiser.

APD Officer Chuck Haegele confirmed there was an event that police were investigating. He declined to comment further, adding that police expected to have a report by morning.

A witness at the scene who identified himself only as Drew said he was the brother of the student, an 18-year-old OU freshman named Anthony who was on Elliot Street for a party.

Police arrested the student for public intoxication, underage alcohol consumption and jaywalking, the witness said.

Neither of the witnesses confirmed any injuries. 17
