Athens plans revamp of Richland Avenue

The city might receive an additional $1.3 million grant to redesign Richland Avenue, Athens City Council members said in yesterday's meeting.

The $1.3 million Transportation Enhancement Grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation could be used for the design phase of the Richland Avenue reconstruction project. Street Director Andy Stone will apply for the grant by the May 1 deadline.

Next Monday Athens City Council will set aside $300,000 for the next portion of the design fee as an ordinance. Last year the city spent $200,000 on design.

The city has received one federal and one state grant totaling $3 million for the design of the bridge, said Mayor Paul Wiehl.

A lot of the money has to do with public input

Wiehl said. The city has worked with Burgess & Niple to design the project with input from residents, he said, adding that the project has become very expensive.

- said Councilwoman Chris Knisely, D-at large.

The city has discussed redesigning the area for several months because the Richland Avenue and 682 intersection is the most dangerous in the nine-county district, Knisely said.

If plans work accordingly, construction will begin in 2009 and could be completed by 2010, Wiehl said.
