Local businesses encouraged to sponsor annual Court Street bash

The Athens Clean and Safe Halloween Committee and The Athens News are working together to encourage local businesses to advertise at this year's Uptown Halloween party.

At Athens Mayor Ric Abel's news conference yesterday, Committee Chair Jonathan Holmberg announced the partnership, in which the newspaper is reserving about $4,000 worth of advertisement space in four issues to any businesses that contribute to the committee.

Without the sponsorship

without the face of the businesses and local community Halloween really doesn't get to its potential Holmberg said. And I think we haven't scratched the potential of what Halloween can be in this town.

The ad space is spread over four issues of the paper, and businesses can make different-sized contributions. Those that contribute more money will have greater prominence in the reserved advertisement spaces, Holmberg said.

The Athens News will pay Holmberg $800 to be an event coordinator

according to the news release, and to promote Halloween.

The committee funds, organizes and installs the stages on Court Street for Halloween every year.

Abel and Holmberg said they plan to have more joint news conferences to announce ideas for reducing the event's costs.

Look for big things to happen this Halloween

and this is just a small step towards what I believe is the big future of Halloween in Athens

Holmberg said.
