Bible study geared toward psychology majors

A Bible study geared toward psychology majors might seem odd, but for Erin Craig, the two seemed to be a great way to reach out to others in her major.

Craig, a senior studying psychology, began the Bible study last year as a way to meet people in her major and create a learning community for Christians at Ohio University.

“I felt like God was calling me the summer after my sophomore year to do something in my major,” Craig said. “I feel like I didn’t know people in my major that well, and I thought it’d be cool to get to know people and just talk about what people believe spiritually."

Craig explained that the group is also welcoming to people of other majors. Samantha Beachy, a senior studying interior architecture, serves as co-leader the group.

“The thing I love best is probably everyone’s openness and vulnerability with each other and just their honesty and desire to come together and just learn more about God and to know Him,” Beachy said.

The group starts off the sessions with a prayer and then discusses what their classes entail, what they enjoy best about them and what their plans are for their future career.

They then get into reading Bible verses and articles that relate to Christianity and share their views with one another as they read.

Matt Solden, a sophomore studying psychology, said he believes other psychology majors would be interested in joining the group. While he is not a part of the group, he said it is something he could see himself joining.

“I think that’s always nice to meet people and especially people that are interested in the same things as you,” Solden said.

Andrya Carlson, a senior studying magazine journalism and psychology, heard about the group last year from a flyer on a bathroom stall.

“This isn’t a Christian school, so it’s nice to be in a group of people who have basically the same beliefs and everything and be able to talk about the Bible openly,” Carlson said.

Craig said she hopes members of the group feel accepted and part of an open environment.

“We’re respectful of what you believe, and I just want to get to know people in my major and just talk about spiritual things,” she said. “We’d love for people to come."

The sessions are every Tuesday from 8 to 9 p.m. in Grover room W111. For more information about the group or to join, email Craig at ec327209@ohio.edu.
