Studying as punishment undermines education

I was appalled at ' and deeply embarrassed for ' Ohio University when I read that the punishment given in the athletic program is studying. Studying leads to knowledge, understanding, improved thinking skills and professional jobs.

As a professor here, I want to assure my students that my requirements for assignments and studying are not punishment in any way; I require them because I care about your becoming smarter, more capable and better able to make your mark in the world as an educated and engaged professional and citizen.

I consider it to be a privilege to be actively engaged in learning, and I hope you do also. Given the mission of OU as an educational institution, I would hope that other faculty members and administrators share my view ... and institute a zero-tolerance policy for those who undermine our mission by punishing students with getting educated.Bojinka Bishop is a professor at Ohio University and a member of city council.
