As a crane lifted huge silver water chillers into the air, traffic backed up on Court Street and students stopped and stared.
Contractor, AJ Stockmeister, closed President Street in front of Bentley Hall today and tomorrow so crews could operate a crane to remove aging water chillers from the roof of the Computer Services Center.
The building is having new water chillers installed so the building can be kept cool during the summer heat pounding outside and computers humming night and day inside. The computers housed inside the center generate large amounts of heat and, especially during the summer months, the building requires powerful air conditioning to keep the computers cool.
“We have to have (these chillers) for the computers and drives," said Ryan Hanson, a construction worker with the project. “The chilled water has to be on all year.”
President Street should re-open tomorrow afternoon.
