'Bridgerton' spin-off prequel on Violet Bridgerton is official

On Oct. 8, Netflix officially announced a new “Bridgerton” prequel. The spin-off will follow the relationship between Violet Bridgerton and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. Audiences can explore the romantic lives of the Bridgerton parents before starting their family.

The limited series was announced on the official Bridgerton Instagram account. The account posted a Lady Whistledown paper announcing a new “Bridgerton” series. For those unfamiliar with the show, Lady Whistledown is the infamous author who narrates the show. The producers use her to convey information to audiences.

The executive producer of "Bridgerton," Shonda Rhimes, is expected to co-write and serve as showrunner for the prequel with Nicholas Nardini. Both created the first spin-off, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." From what Netflix released, audiences expect the new Violet limited series to be set up similarly to the Queen Charlotte prequel.

Casting for the spin-off is yet announced. Connie Jenkins-Greig is the only previous actress to have played young Violet. It is speculated that she may return but is has not been confirmed. Arsema Thomas, who played a young Lady Agatha Danbury in Queen Charlotte's prequel, has also been confirmed to return.

Shortly after the prequel's announcement, Thomas posted to her Instagram story hinting at her return. She reposted an article about the announcement. On her story, she wrote, “We ride again,” hinting to fans that she would return in the new spin-off series. Audiences are excited to welcome back Thomas in her role as young Lady Danbury.

Each “Bridgerton” season is based on a novel written by author Julia Quinn. Because of this, most fans have questioned what the prequel may be based on. Quinn published a novella, “Violet in Bloom,” as part of her novel “The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After." Audiences expect the majority of the limited series to be derived from the novella.

The novella is only around 50 pages, however, it covers two key moments that occur in Violet's life. The first is her childhood, which introduces her parents and their relationship. The other moment is her romance with her future husband, Edmund Bridgerton.

Her upbringing is a crucial part of her backstory because of the way it affected her future. Her parents were cruel and disliked each other. This impacts the way Violet reacts to her newfound relationship with Edmund. This likely will be featured in the upcoming series.

Violet’s relationship with Edmund leads to their marriage. While Edmund is mentioned numerous times, he is not a recurring character in the original series. His accidental death is mentioned constantly, and how it impacted both Violet and the Bridgerton family. The spin-off will give fans a closer look into their relationship before the accident.

Fans are excited to learn about the relationship between the Bridgerton parents. Audiences of the show do not know much about Edmund’s character besides what the family has said. Violet speaks very highly about him, and frequently explains how wonderful their love was.

When speaking of their relationship to her children, she states how she wishes for them to each find a love as powerful as her own. She calls her and Edmund's romance the blueprint for rare love matches that she wants her children to find. Violet describes Edmund and their relationship very fondly. This excites viewers for the limited series, which will finally introduce Violet's late husband as a recurring character.

Audiences can look forward to the fifth season from the “Bridgerton” franchise. Season five will premiere sometime in 2027 and will focus on the third Bridgerton daughter, Francesca. It will primarily follow her second chance at love with the heiress and cousin of her late husband, Michaela.

In preparation for the new spin-off, viewers can watch this year's newest season, primarily focused on Benedict Bridgerton. Netflix also hinted at season six in May. This gives audiences many things to look forward to regarding the Netflix series.
