Soccer: Slim roster spells defeat by Wright State

Ohio wrapped up its spring season by falling to Wright State 3-0 after the squad was unable to come back from a pair of first-half tallies.

Coach Stacy Strauss said the Bobcats did not demonstrate good decision-making with the ball and did not play with a fast-paced intensity. The slower play might have resulted from the team’s drive to Fairborn, Ohio. The Bobcats have lost twice on the road this spring.

The Raiders opened the scoring late in the first half when they notched a pair of goals with less than 15 minutes remaining. Trailing 2-0 entering the second half, the Bobcats tried to create more scoring opportunities but were stifled by their lack of possession.

Cat Rogers and Erin Schwenke created the Bobcats’ most promising chance. Streaking down the left side of the pitch, Schwenke caught a pass from Rogers and then swung in a cross, just missing a diving Maggie Murnane.

Wright State scored once more in the final 15 minutes of the second half to seal the win. The Raiders’ ability to take advantage of turnovers and use time and space in the midfield made the difference.

“Wright State was the better team,” Strauss said.

Strauss specifically noted Ohio’s poor possession as a reason for the defeat. Her team had  trouble moving the ball up the field and retaining possession. The Bobcats were playing with a slim roster, though, after a few players fell ill.

Forward Veronica Rock made her defensive debut because of the roster situation.

“Illness necessitated the change,” Strauss said. “She played well and was still able to (contribute) offensively.”

Ohio finished the spring season with a 2-3-1 record. The Bobcats will host the alumnae game next Saturday at Chessa Field.
